Over 6,000 children and youth live in foster care in Kansas.

Most of the children who are separated from their families and need foster care are over the age of 8, or they are part of a sibling group. As a foster parent, you can strengthen a child's community and family connections, nurturing them during some of the most challenging times in their lives. Not only will you help some of our most vulnerable, but you will grow, learn and expand your life in ways you can’t imagine.

What do foster parents do?

Learn how to help kids feel safe and cherished.

Show up to help reunify youth with family or kin when possible.

Keep children connected to their schools and communities whenever they can.

Work with the family’s team to provide the best care possible for children and the best support possible for families.

Requirements to become a foster parent

Start by researching the state requirements for new parents. In Kansas, all foster parents must:

  • Be 21 years or older
  • Maintain financial stability
  • Live in a safe and comfortable home
  • Pass the home inspection
  • Provide enough personal space for a foster child
  • Clear a background check (all adults in the house)
  • Have a valid driver's license and an insured vehicle
  • Finish required foster parent training
  • Complete the Home Study Process

Good foster parenting requires your best effort, but not "perfect" parenting. Spend time to learn about the foster care system and the information given to you during training and orientation. Once you have become a licensed foster parent, focus on your foster child's wants, needs, and overall well-being.

To learn more about becoming a foster parent in Kansas, contact your local child-placing agency. These social service agencies are state-approved to match foster children with licensed foster care homes.

Every foster agency provides orientation, where you will receive information about foster care and how to obtain a license. Orientation will help you decide if fostering a child is the right path for you and your family. If you are married or in a relationship, ask yourselves questions before committing to fostering together.

After orientation, your next step is the family assessment process, including the Home Study. A social worker at your local child-placing agency will help you through every step.

Been trying to contact this office since the first of September. Left several messages and waiting on hold daily just to be hung up. Nothing has been resolved. I've gotten zero response. No answer on the phone, no call back from the SEVERAL messages I've left, nothing in the mail. Nothing. The month is half over and I still haven't gotten anything for this month and these people are sitting on their bums not being helpful and not caring that people kitchens are empty waiting on them to feel like doing their job. This entire office is a joke and any good review you see here is a fake one I promise.
Do better. It should be embarrassing that this is how you help your people.
I'd make this no stars if they'd let me.

I wish it was an option for no stars.I work during their normal business hours so I have to call in for assistance. When I say I was on the phone from the start of my 8hr shift to the end without speaking to anyone who can help me I honestly mean it. I need to do a recertification and turned in my paperwork at the beginning of the month, they sent a letter stating they need more information yesterday and I have to the 25th to turn whatever in,but I need clarification on what they want. How can I do that if no one is going to answer the phone. This place has the worst customer service and they don't give a damn what you need because they're just there to get paid not actually service the community

If I could give zero stars I would. Especially, for the lady I had to witness treating someone horrible. I literally am making a complaint due to the fact of how I witnessed a woman speak to a participant. First, I would like to inform I do work for the Missouri department of social services and would die if I ever seen someone be treated this way. A woman was expressing her hardships such as her husband is in icu as the sole provider from 3 strokes and one heart attack and open heart surgery where they performed a quadruple bypass. She was confused on what assistance she has applied for and the process and DEBBIE WAS SO RUDE, she states slamming around a cash assistance application when they lady literally was just voicing her income reduction the woman is still raising her voice at her basically as if she is wrong for still being confused begins to tell the lady she is giving her attitude and she doesn’t have to deal with it but the lady was simply trying to clarify what she needed to do because she has never been in this situation of needing assistance. So I proceeded up to the counter kindly asked her name she said My name? I said yes ma’am your name, she said Debbie while she giggled bobbing her head around like she is a bobble head. She then begins to tell me “please go ahead and complain I would love to see that!” As I am telling her thank you for her name! I don’t know if this will get to any where of importance but obviously Debbie isn’t in the right field if she isn’t wanting to assist people getting assistance and they really need to start acting as if people are actually in hardships when they come in the last thing this lady wanted was a social worker going off on her because she is unhappy with her job.
