Requirements to become a foster parent
Many new parents are worried they'll be on their own if they decide to foster. That's not true; you have tons of support on your side.
You have the Iowa Department of Human Services (DHS). Your local DHS recruits and approves families for fostering and adoption. They also place children with approved parents.
The Iowa Foster & Adoptive Parents Association has handbooks, contact phone numbers, information on training and case plans, useful PDFs for foster parents, and more online.
You also have your local child-placing agency for assistance. They're licensed and approved to train parents and place children in homes. You can find information on how to navigate the legal system or tips for working with birth parents, for example.
Many state non-profits dedicate themselves to assisting foster youth and the families caring for them. They may help with basic care, such as clothing or food, or educate parents on specific topics.

If I could give them zero stars, I would. AOTG is operating within the bounds of the law, but not morally or ethically. Our own adoption, which the powers that be admitted they had concerns about but never relayed that information to us, disrupted last year. I have since been in contact with multiple families. Many disruptions, not a care in the world as long as they get their money! One family I know of showed up to the hospital and the birth mother did not even exist.
As for our situation, the birthmother was lying the whole time, pressuring us for money, we expressed our concerns to Abby's staff, who were negotiating for her the whole time, and when it all went south, suddenly they bore no responsibility, despite being involved the entire time. Too cute by half.
Terrible agency, the stories I hear coming from families whose dreams have been destroyed by them are heartbreaking. We lost $30K to Abby's One True GRift. Steer clear.

We were matched through Abby's One True Gift, and it was the best experience for us. We were matched less than two weeks when we applied. The match happened in August and the baby was born in November! The agency had great communication with us throughout the adoption process and helped us along the journey. Not sure why there are so many negative reviews, but that was not our experience at all. I highly recommend them!

I never write reviews, but felt compelled to in this case for a couple reasons. One is because of my absolutely amazing experience with them, and two is because i had read their reviews before signing up, and was shocked by all the bad ones I read based on my experience! Now in adoption, i know every situation is different, but I wanted to share my story with AOTG in case it helps anyone out there. I signed up with AOTG in January of this year. I was told that it could be between 3 to 18 months before i could be matched with a birth mom, which is typical I've heard. This is my first adoption, so i had no experience with this. I had been trying for a year previous to this with another agency, with no luck. I signed up on Jan 3rd, and received a call on Jan 10th that i was being matched!! Long story short, the match went so well, AOTG was with me every step of the way and helped me tremendously, and was very detailed in their explanations of the entire process and what to expect. They supported me thru the whole process, all the paperwork, and got me amazing attorneys to complete the adoption so fast it was incredible. I was home with my new baby within 1 month of signing up with them. The birthmom was super great also. Like i said, i know every situation is different so i can't say everyone will have the same experience, but i am absolutely thrilled to have found them and worked with them. I can't recommend this agency enough, and will work with them again in the future if i choose to adopt another child. I am more than happy to provide any references, and be contacted if anyone has any questions! Best of luck in your adoption journey!!

Run from this EVIL agency!!

RUN, DO NOT WALK AWAY FROM THIS AGENCY! From the time of match to failed adoption to lack of rematch, their communication was dismal and their ethics were very questionable! Their problems are not just due to a failed match but due to treatment of adoptive and birth parents before and after. I don't want anyone else to have the pain and poor experience so please don't let them think that old reviews have changed and been addressed as they have not.
