The Georgia Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) and Fox 5 Atlanta partner to sponsor Wednesday’s Child, an award-winning program and a national campaign with a proven track record of success aimed at increasing the number of adoptions of children in foster care. Featured children are usually past the age of eight (8), sibling groups and/or children with special needs who have been in the foster care system for some time and would love to be adopted into a forever family.

The desire and open heart to support children and families are among the most important criteria for becoming a Foster or Adoptive Parent. The ability to act as a positive role model, parent, mentor, and supporter for children, while their families rebuild, is the foundation of Partnership Parenting

Requirements to become a foster parent

The DHS assists foster families with placement and ensures the child adjusts well to their new environment. Whether you have years of parenting experience or are relatively new to the idea, they have many support options for families. You can find plenty of information on the DHS/DFCS website or call them for more assistance.

Your local licensed child placement agency also places children in the foster system with carefully matched parents. Although foster care is temporary, it's crucial to find the right fit. That's why parents get a say in age range and gender.

There are also many state support groups for foster families that provide educational resources, services, and more. Connecting with these organizations and adding to your personal support network will be invaluable.

One of the best ways to become a better parent, whether you plan on fostering a child short-term or adopting, is to read as much as you can about Georgia's foster system. For instance, recently proposed bills would help to streamline parts of the state's foster care placement system.

You can find plenty of information available online for free as well. Blogs, podcasts, and videos are all incredibly useful ways to obtain new information about fostering.

I am very disappointed in the service. I have a very important matter to discuss with someone, yet I've tried everything number I could find and left a number of messages with no return call. I know there may be a delay due to Covid, but I have been calling over the past 3 weeks. It would be nice if someone could return my call since I can't go to the office.

They were nice enough to help me through someone in that office so that I didn't have to leave with unresolved issues but they hardly ever answer the phone or return your call.

They do not care about the ppl of GA for real. If I could give no stars I would. If you need help in GA do not count on your government that you pay your taxes to. They cut you off for no reason, say they are going to call at a certain time they call you a totally different day and time and say you missed the appt. I submitted my verification online and they said I didn't. The contact number they have listed on the papers they send out are disconnected or fake. L. Scott has supposedly been my caseworker for years never heard from her and can never reach her.

I have called the Decatur location so many times. Maybe and I said maybe I'll get someone to answer the phone. When they do they will give me a case worker number to call. My case was closed in November on the gateway website. I was told I would be mailed a copy because they dont do emails or fax....OK. Still here we are almost February and I havent received it yet. I have verified that its closed by phone but my so call case worker Mrs. Stewart seems to have not put it in the system yet. I have had the call center email her many times about this and it still hasnt been done. So I guess I have to just wait untill she feels the need to get it done. Why is it that people has to suffer because the employees dont do their job in a timely manner. Me and my children had no food for the holidays, no Medicaid when they got sick and I have to pay out of pocket because things aren't done in a timely manner. I guess you all feel because we qet state help our lives aren't important.
Well I work just like you all, I pay taxes just like you all and if your to lazy to do your job.... PLEASE QUIT! People are suffering because of your inconsistent ways! Let someone else that wants to help do the Job. Because obviously there is a bad selection of employees at all Dekalb county Offices including Corporate. And upgrade your system please its waaayyyy behind. People aren't doing paper hardly anymore. Make it convenient for the people your suppose to be helping.
