The Georgia Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) and Fox 5 Atlanta partner to sponsor Wednesday’s Child, an award-winning program and a national campaign with a proven track record of success aimed at increasing the number of adoptions of children in foster care. Featured children are usually past the age of eight (8), sibling groups and/or children with special needs who have been in the foster care system for some time and would love to be adopted into a forever family.

The desire and open heart to support children and families are among the most important criteria for becoming a Foster or Adoptive Parent. The ability to act as a positive role model, parent, mentor, and supporter for children, while their families rebuild, is the foundation of Partnership Parenting

Requirements to become a foster parent

The DHS assists foster families with placement and ensures the child adjusts well to their new environment. Whether you have years of parenting experience or are relatively new to the idea, they have many support options for families. You can find plenty of information on the DHS/DFCS website or call them for more assistance.

Your local licensed child placement agency also places children in the foster system with carefully matched parents. Although foster care is temporary, it's crucial to find the right fit. That's why parents get a say in age range and gender.

There are also many state support groups for foster families that provide educational resources, services, and more. Connecting with these organizations and adding to your personal support network will be invaluable.

One of the best ways to become a better parent, whether you plan on fostering a child short-term or adopting, is to read as much as you can about Georgia's foster system. For instance, recently proposed bills would help to streamline parts of the state's foster care placement system.

You can find plenty of information available online for free as well. Blogs, podcasts, and videos are all incredibly useful ways to obtain new information about fostering.

Have been trying to get tech support for gateway and no one answers. Can't log into my account because I need my password reset, but can't get tech support to answer and a call back isn't an option for tech support. Case workers do not have the ability to reset passwords. Ridiculous. If you can't get in touch with tech support, someone else should have the ability. Ms. Smith said she was giving me a "one time code" to enter when she transferred me, but she just put me thru the automated system again. I guess she thought I was dumb enough to think she was helping. I spoke with Mrs. Anderson, ID 35370, that told me Ms. Smith didn't have the ability to reset passwords. Figured that once I was back into the automated system.

I’d like to add that one of the workers (or maybe ex workers) was being racist to others and talking about black people ‘picking cotton’. I thought you’re supposed to get fired whenever you make hate speech about people online? Let’s get rid of Shaliqua Smith if she isn’t gone already.

No Stars! Why is DFCS still closed with the type of responsibility that this agency has for others??!!! Citizens should not be paying for the upkeep of DFCS buildings while these workers have been home over 2 1/2 years!! Many people, particularly the elderly, have fallen by the wayside and lost benefits while this agency has been closed for inperson operation. Many elderly and rural citizens do not have internet access or may not be very tech savvy. For those who are, well see the reviews, good luck with getting someone on the phone who can assist you or who does not disconnect as soon as you get someone to answer. Let's not talk about these so called scheduled interviews! Try to appeal benefit decisions, and benefit recipiants may have to drive 60 miles for an administrative court hearing...during the age of virtual court hearing!! Rural citizens, the elderly and disabled citizens may have a difficult time getting to these hearings or getting the case manager on the phone to assist. Talk about discouraging but I guess that's the point! The process for how benefits are determined is shamful. Why are senior citizens who have worked and put into the "system" receiving foodstamp amounts of $15 and $20 because their social security benefits are considered unearned income?? What the...seems like discrimination! However, an able to work person, who is not putting forth any effort to work can get $1,000.00 food stamps. No one should be able to get more than $550.00 p/m in stamps and the income limit could then be raised! America..really?

I was denied caps. which I desperately need for my son because I am a single mom who’s baby daddy isn’t making payments on child support. I just lost my job. They said they didn’t receive my documents which I uploaded on time. So I just reapplied and someone over the phone told me she searched and couldn’t find my documents.. now I can’t get a call back from anyone to try and get some help and figure out what the hell is going on.
