Requirements to become a foster parent
Many do not realize the need for new resource families in California. The number of foster kids outnumber the foster families who can provide short or long-term care. Foster advocates work hard to find places for these children, but it is not easy.
The latest 2021 report from the Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System (AFCARS) report in California says there are:
- 47,871 kids in California's foster care system
- 22,892 who entered foster care
- 15,386 foster kids awaiting adoption
- California foster kids across all ages, with a median of 8 years
- 33% whose foster child case plans include adoption
A child's median time in the California foster care system is over a year at 16.8 months. 13% spend 3-4 years in foster care.
California needs foster parents to take in multiple children if they have the time and energy to care for them. Sibling groups often need care, and it is essential to support these family bonds. In California, it is challenging to find homes for teenagers, though they need stable environments and reliable adults to support them.

Horrible! Tonya cohen isn't a fair person or professional! Just because she asks a few questions she thinks she knows your history and she doesn't! The questions she asks aren't relevant and she doesn't give a fair chance to explain situations. Especially if one has depression, come on who in this world doesn't have a form of depression?! She listens to here say from individuals who we do not know and makes her report on her own feelings. We did everything we were asked to do and passed home Inspection, took the classes and went to court hearings because we are 100% in to help a child. If we weren't we wouldn't waste our time! These poor children that get lost in the system because people like Tanya Cohen being able to decide for these children is wrong! She was very unprofessional when "trying" to explain why she made the decision she made but it didn't make any sense and very contradicting. It was very clear she wasn't going to give us a goodreport from the beginning because she wanted another family to get the child. When we were the ones that had a close bond with the child from the moment she was born and all through her NICU stay we were there everyday day and night feeding, changing diapers singing and praying with the baby till they took her to foster 3 1/2 weeks later. We were devastated! Luckily the caregiver at the time kept in touch with us daily with video chats and meeting in person and sending photos on a daily basis then they placed the baby with another family! Again we were devastated and now no longer have a connection to the child. The baby new my voice and face and always smiled and be calmed and the was taken away from the only people she was bonded with. They say they care about the children and it's about the children, but it's about them not wanting to do paperwork and just place the child and close the case! Horrible experience with this foster Litehouse and Tanya Cohen!!! I've been a wreck losing the relationship with the infant.😭💔 These are true facts!!
