Hathaway-Sycamores Child and Family Services
We've been serving Southern California since 1902 and are here for good.
Communities flourish when individuals are healthy, supported, and have a deep-rooted sense of well-being. With a focus on under-served populations, Sycamores impacts over 18,000 vulnerable children, youth, and families in under-served communities with programs, services, and support. We believe this starts by giving people exactly what they need, however unique that looks.
The safety of children is of the utmost importance at Sycamores. Children should be in a nurturing environment that allows their curious nature to flourish. Unfortunately, this is not always the reality. According to the Children’s Law Center of California, close to 100 California children are placed in foster care every day. Los Angeles County alone has over 25,000 children, ages 0-18, in the foster care system. They are temporarily placed in a home, with the primary goal of helping them develop and grow in a safe environment. Children cannot advocate for themselves, so Sycamores works hard to ensure they have a safe place to call home.

Requirements to become a foster parent
Many do not realize the need for new resource families in California. The number of foster kids outnumber the foster families who can provide short or long-term care. Foster advocates work hard to find places for these children, but it is not easy.
The latest 2021 report from the Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System (AFCARS) report in California says there are:
- 47,871 kids in California's foster care system
- 22,892 who entered foster care
- 15,386 foster kids awaiting adoption
- California foster kids across all ages, with a median of 8 years
- 33% whose foster child case plans include adoption
A child's median time in the California foster care system is over a year at 16.8 months. 13% spend 3-4 years in foster care.
California needs foster parents to take in multiple children if they have the time and energy to care for them. Sibling groups often need care, and it is essential to support these family bonds. In California, it is challenging to find homes for teenagers, though they need stable environments and reliable adults to support them.

I see a lot of bad reviews from people with outside perspectives I was actually there this place almost saved my life the staff were excellent we could literally eat all day if we wanted to the food was in our huts we could just open up the refrigerator and warm something up or eat something or cook something it was a great program but I was hardheaded and I didn’t listen so I got kicked out but had I listened I would be in a great position right now
And they’re great on de-escalation for sure whenever I will get too mad about something the campus was pretty big I had plenty of space to walk around but not only that they would take me to the movie theaters the 99 Cents store mini golfing ridein mountain bikes in the mountains

This place is a disgrace to the community and I’m extremely hurt and disgusted my cousin has been in this place for over a year fighting to go to a home he is wanted ! They refuse to let him they starve him he’s always hungry he’s constantly complaining of the negligence and his now in the ICU !!!! SHAME ON THIS ESTABLISHMENT AND EVERYONE THAT RUNS IT THESE KIDS DESERVE A SAFE COMFORTABLE ENVIRONMENT FOR THEM TO CALL HOME ! Not a shelter !
