Requirements to become a foster parent

Many do not realize the need for new resource families in California. The number of foster kids outnumber the foster families who can provide short or long-term care. Foster advocates work hard to find places for these children, but it is not easy.

The latest 2021 report from the Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System (AFCARS) report in California says there are:

  • 47,871 kids in California's foster care system
  • 22,892 who entered foster care
  • 15,386 foster kids awaiting adoption
  • California foster kids across all ages, with a median of 8 years
  • 33% whose foster child case plans include adoption

A child's median time in the California foster care system is over a year at 16.8 months. 13% spend 3-4 years in foster care.

California needs foster parents to take in multiple children if they have the time and energy to care for them. Sibling groups often need care, and it is essential to support these family bonds. In California, it is challenging to find homes for teenagers, though they need stable environments and reliable adults to support them.

I have personally have had a remarkable experience with them. I have been working with this agency for over 2 years and my mother for over 5 years. I was reading a negative comment about the process of getting certified, but there is a very important factor to consider, each case is different and its not on the agencies hands to accelerate the process. This is the county's doing. So if we call and complain its really not in their hands. For instance , my process took a little longer then expected when i called and told them why this was happening, they informed me the department in charge of that in the COUNTY was low on staff. but when it came to the process of the agency and my application they did everything supper fast. The staff in Greenhouse are extremely friendly and have been here with me EVERY STEP of the way. The owner (MIchelle) and all the staff are wonderful, and do look out for the parents and the kids. for example, in one occasion there was a Disneyland trip it was going to be free for all kids 12 and under and my mother had a 13 year old and MIchelle (the owner) personally called and said she will be giving us a gift card to pay for the 13 year old Disney ticket because they did not want her to feel left out. As for the staff i am speechless, i have never met much more amazing loving people in my life (Pat, Cynthia, MAriah) etc. I highly encourage you to consider becoming a resource parent its an amazing job.

This agency at first seemed to be a supportive agency but instead I learned different. I understand now why so many people do not become foster care parents. This agency lied throughout the entire process. The owner who is also a pastor particularly lied the most. Mostly about the timeline of the entire fostering process. When I finally received two foster kids, I received no help or support from this agency. Then when I complained about the disconnect between the employees at the agency I was then decertified from their agency. I did not receive a phone call neither did the owner's wife Michelle call and Converse with me about being decertified. Then when the time came for me to pick up my check I called this agency twice and I even express to Patricia not mail by check but they still mailed my check after me driving 30 mins to the agency was I told Michelle the owner's wife decided to mail my check only delaying my payment. All of this negativity from a family who are supposed to be like minded as me, meaning we're all Christian. I am just very disappointed with this agency and their unprofessional approach to my complaints. Maybe one day they will realize that is all about the foster kids and not about money, or assumptions. Where there is confusement God Is not there. God bless!
