Requirements to become a foster parent
Many do not realize the need for new resource families in California. The number of foster kids outnumber the foster families who can provide short or long-term care. Foster advocates work hard to find places for these children, but it is not easy.
The latest 2021 report from the Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System (AFCARS) report in California says there are:
- 47,871 kids in California's foster care system
- 22,892 who entered foster care
- 15,386 foster kids awaiting adoption
- California foster kids across all ages, with a median of 8 years
- 33% whose foster child case plans include adoption
A child's median time in the California foster care system is over a year at 16.8 months. 13% spend 3-4 years in foster care.
California needs foster parents to take in multiple children if they have the time and energy to care for them. Sibling groups often need care, and it is essential to support these family bonds. In California, it is challenging to find homes for teenagers, though they need stable environments and reliable adults to support them.

We have finalized three adoptions with chrysalis house in 6 years and we are so happy with this organization. They are not only knowledgeable and professional in what they do but they go over and beyond to make sure you have all of the support throughout the process. If you are interested in adopting whether it be domestic, international or foster to adopt.. meet with the ladies of chrysalis house to learn more, you will not be disappointed.

*Expectant moms beware!* open adoptions are a scam. If you ever want to see your child again stay FAR away from Chrysalis House
Update: if all you want is a picture of your child every once in awhile "open adoption" is the way to go. Every promise of being involved and being able to know your own child goes out the window once you sign those papers. My son's "parents" think it would be "too confusing" to know me and his father. Open means nothing!

We couldn't have been happier with our experience. All the ladies were kind and helpful and there for us every step of the way. I highly recommend using this agency during your adoption journey.They care about you as a person, no matter the situation.

My husband and I went to our first orientation with Chrysalis House last night and it was such an exciting experience. The staff has been nothing but nice and we look forward to this new journey with them by our sides.
