Agape Villages is a licensed foster family agency placing children in foster homes in communities throughout Northern California. We accept referrals from California’s Department of Social Services, Child Protective Services, and County Mental Health Departments. We serve disadvantaged children, adolescents, and young adults from newborn to 21 years of age.

We are also a licensed adoption agency, serving our families, children, and youth through the permanency of adoption.
There are 53,000 children in foster care in California. Being placed in foster care significantly impacts every aspect of a child’s life: emotional, physical, social, moral, spiritual development and well-being. The children have been removed from their families due to neglect and/or abuse. All children entering the system have experienced trauma, loss, neglect and grief.

Requirements to become a foster parent

Many do not realize the need for new resource families in California. The number of foster kids outnumber the foster families who can provide short or long-term care. Foster advocates work hard to find places for these children, but it is not easy.

The latest 2021 report from the Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System (AFCARS) report in California says there are:

  • 47,871 kids in California's foster care system
  • 22,892 who entered foster care
  • 15,386 foster kids awaiting adoption
  • California foster kids across all ages, with a median of 8 years
  • 33% whose foster child case plans include adoption

A child's median time in the California foster care system is over a year at 16.8 months. 13% spend 3-4 years in foster care.

California needs foster parents to take in multiple children if they have the time and energy to care for them. Sibling groups often need care, and it is essential to support these family bonds. In California, it is challenging to find homes for teenagers, though they need stable environments and reliable adults to support them.

Maybe I'm bias because I work here, but I knew absolutely nothing about foster care before coming into the field. Since working here, I witness everyday the passion and love our social workers have for foster youth. They will bend over backwards to advocate for these children, and do everything they can to ensure that our foster youth live happy and normal lives, and get to experience many of the same things that children who are well-off get to. Agape has a close rapport between foster families and staff, office staff are always here to help with any questions, whether you're a biological parent, foster parent, or interested in becoming a foster parent. Our social workers are dedicated and friendly, and easy to get in contact with. If you're interested in becoming a foster parent, join Agape! :-)

When my husband and I decided to become first time resource parents, we began the process of gathering information to compare and contrast the benefits of working with an FFA or directly with the County in which we reside. We decided that as first timers who had a lot to learn about the process, Agape was the better choice for us. We liked the idea of having weekly visits with our assigned social worker and the additional support and resources that Agape offers. They offered flexibility with their training classes, one on one support throughout the licensing process and they are always willing and happy to help answer any questions we have had along the way. Every person we have met at Agape throughout this process has been caring, considerate of our family’s individual needs and above all extremely supportive. Having had a few placements now, the extra support and weekly visits have been such an added benefit as we never feel like we are on our own to figure out the many twists and turns that fostering can take. My husband and I including our daughters, have been blessed to help nurture and care for some amazing children over the past few months, and this experience has changed all of our lives for the better in so many more ways than I could have ever imagined, and we will be forever grateful that we have had the love and support of Agape all along the way, making it all possible.
