Requirements to become a foster parent

Adults who are new to the fostering process sometimes feel overwhelmed and wonder if they will have support on their journey. Your child-placing agency is the first resource. Social services caseworkers provide aspiring foster parents with various types of support and connections. These include free educational training programs, helplines, and support groups.

It is important that foster parents build their individual support network, too. Connecting with other foster families with more experience is an excellent place to begin. Texas groups offer foster parent meetups; you can search online for the closest one.

The Texas Foster Family Association provides state training, a regional directory of support services, a summer training conference, and more. Membership benefits include getting access to foster care professionals and learning more about ways to become better caregivers. Children of TFFA members can also get assistance through the Scholarship Fund.

Austin Angels is another support organization that strives to assist foster parents and Texas foster children. They offer care packages and gifts for foster children and their caregivers, mentorship options, and education, among other resources. Foster children and teens can learn valuable skills that help prepare them for independent living, as well.

Been connected to KFI for 12 years either in foster care or adoptions. The personal commitment and dedication to the kids and parents-to-be is 2nd to none.

I worked as part of the Kids First team for five and a half years in various capacities and I can’t say enough about being an employee there. Much like the foster parents said, it’s like going to work everyday with friends who are like family, and to this day this is still my family. I’ve never felt more supported by a company than I did at Kids First for my growth, both while I was there and when I took my ventures elsewhere. I love this agency because they truly have a heart for quality foster care not just for the children but the parents and working relationships with other agencies (CPAs, CPS, therapists, CASA, etc.). I still have teens who were in our care reach out to me saying “I didn’t like your decisions then but I appreciate them now as an adult”. Carla is an amazing mentor and leader that hand selected each of the staff to lead in her vision for KFI. Each and every staff member strives for excellence and quality, so if you’re looking for an agency to be apart of that is like family, you’re looking for Kids First!!

Love kids first we started fostering in 2017 and have adopted 5 kids with them. We would love to keep fostering if we had to room to do so. The staff are amazing and so helpful with any issues we may have but didn't. They care for the kids plus the foster parents. We hope to start fostering again soon when our oldest moves out in a year or so. We checked out other agencies in 2017 and no one responded to us but Kids First and knew was Gods plan. Pray and ask God to lead you to them we are glad we did.

Kids First was our top pick as we were switching from CPS to a CPA. They were quick in getting us on board and ready to go. There were no hiccups in our placements we already had. In the almost 3 years we have been with them we have found not only a supportive and helpful staff, but we have found a family who will walk along side us in our fostering journey!
The KFI family supports, loves, and lives their mission of supporting foster families and being a support to the kids in care.

Kids First has been a great help to our family. They licensed us for our 3rd adoption as well as our foster care licensing. They are supportive, knowledgeable, and available. I feel like they legitimately care about us. I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a good agency!
