Being a foster parent is so much more than loving a child in your home. It’s also showing kindness to a family when they need it most.
It’s giving a child a safe place to land during a hard, scary time when they’re away from home. And it’s showing compassion to a parent who is likely overwhelmed, scared, and without a lot of support.

It’s helping a child stay connected to the only home they’ve ever known, in whatever way it’s safe to do so, and cheering on a family that’s living out a comeback story.

At Bethany, our heart beats for family. We want to see families strong, supported, and together. But we know there are times when families face challenges—and children need care.
That’s why we’re seeking foster parents who believe in families too.

Requirements to become a foster parent

Foster parents receive financial support in the form of a monthly board rate. Foster children also receive a clothing allowance, and their medical needs are covered through Medicaid.

In addition to the support you receive from your local DHS or foster care agency, there are other programs and resources available to parents.

The South Carolina Foster Parent Association offers free training to foster parents and kinship caregivers. You can find information on the latest laws and events as well. Plus, you gain access to valuable resources such as informational articles, contact information for professionals, etc.

The SC Foster Parent Association also allows foster families to connect with one another and share advice. You can find local association meetings in your area on their website.

The program Heartfelt Calling's mission is recruiting and supporting foster and adoptive families. Parents can learn more about the system, start the application process, register for orientation, find webinars, and more.

Foster parents that care for children in DSS custody receive reimbursement for related costs. These monthly foster care payments are meant to meet a child's basic care needs.

The most recent board rates are on the South Carolina Department of Social Services website. Payments may vary depending on a child's age and special needs.

Here are the basics;

Extremely rude, intake counselors are dismissive. Good luck dealing with this "Christian" agency. Do not waste your time. Find a reputable agency with people who care! My husband and I do not recommend this place.

We adopted internationally and Bethany in Columbia was the local agency who handled our home study and post-placement services. Adoption is such a challenging process and we felt super supported by Tricia all along the way. We look forward to each of our post-placement visits, eager to show her our girl's progress. I highly recommend using Bethany!

We had such a positive experience working with Bethany. We are so grateful for how the team at Bethany walked alongside us throughout the entire adoption process. They were so helpful with ALL of our questions and we really felt like we were so well cared for and educated throughout the whole experience. We love that the agency provides so much support and care for birth parents as well. It gave us so much peace of mind working with them! We first held our son when he was just a few hours old, and now 18 months later, we still have benefitted from the services provided at Bethany as they have helped us to navigate our continuing relationship with his birth parents. We are so thankful for their support and recommend them to EVERYONE we know! We LOVE Bethany and have been so blessed by this agency!

We highly recommend the Bethany office in Columbia. They have loved and cared for our family, our children, and our children's first families so well. We appreciate their commitment to serve women facing unexpected pregnancies whether or not they ultimately decide on adoption. Everyone in the office is kind and professional, and we are so thankful for their ministry.
