The Buckeye Ranch is a statewide Ohio nonprofit public charity dedicated exclusively to restoring hope and providing healing for children and families through behavioral health, education, and child welfare services. From trauma-informed care to motivational interviewing, The Buckeye Ranch ensures that the organization’s approaches to treating children, youth, and families are strength-based and culturally responsive, offering the best possible chance for the people we serve to overcome obstacles and past traumas and live better lives.

The Buckeye Ranch Foster Care is a network of hundreds of foster homes across Ohio. Our program is comprised of professional staff and foster parents who are committed to the well-being of foster youth and their birth families. Our program provides care for children from infancy through 18 years of age and sometimes beyond.

Requirements to become a foster parent

After deciding to foster, make sure your household members are on board with what will be a life-changing decision to foster. Then, educate yourself about Ohio's requirements for foster parents. Applicants who want to foster or adopt in Ohio must:

  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • Live in a safe and stable home
  • Meet home safety requirements
  • Clear a background check with fingerprinting
  • Provide at least three character references
  • Provide ample space for a foster child in their house or apartment
  • Attend foster parent orientation
  • Take part in required hours of foster parent training
  • Maintain financially stability
  • Prove good health
  • Complete the Home Study process

To apply or ensure you meet the prerequisites, there are two primary Ohio state resources. Contact the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) or a local Public Children's Service Agency (PCSAs).

If you are ready to learn more, contact a local child-placing agency to schedule foster parent information orientation. At orientation, aspiring foster parents learn more about foster parenting responsibilities, navigating the foster system, and the foster application process. If you have questions, orientation is an excellent opportunity to ask questions and meet other potential foster families.

Administrative paperwork can take some time to complete, but having everything prepared will ensure it goes smoothly. It will help the process move along if you gather financial documents ahead of time. These include tax filings and paystubs, which you will need to show as proof of financial stability.

Foster parents in Ohio must also attend 24 hours of pre-service foster parent training. This training teaches foster families about the trauma experienced by all foster children. It also covers how to provide general and specialized care to foster children.

If I could give this place zero stars I would I was there for two years only maybe two or three staff never gave up on me and they all got fired but the bad staff stayed one he sat there and watched me choke on a piece of really hard plastic cause I tried to cut my insides and It was stuck in my wind pipe and all they say is your doing that for attention I'm sorry but they don't know what went through my head that was from 2015 to 2017 so I would never send my daughter there she will never be in places like that

Wrongfully terminated and embarrassed. I gave my all to this company. I wanted to retire at this company. I grew up in that era, where you work the same job for 20 or more years. What a terrible experience. One year and 9 months gone like nothing.

They're not going to help anything they literally sit back and allow the kids to do what they want, for example, they give them computers to do their school work on and my child isn't doing his school work and when we asked whats the consequences they said they can't monitor every child and that they fail school but still allow them to have the computer! He is having issues with his relationship with his father which is 1 reason he's there to begin with! and I thought they would help by maybe having a few sessions over video chat but no they allow him to make all the decisions like where tf did I send my child? While y'all over here collecting a check for absolutely nothing. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND LOOK ELSEWHERE
