Bellefaire JCB is among the nation’s largest, most experienced child service agencies providing a variety of behavioral health, substance abuse, education and prevention services. Through more than 25 programs, we help more than 30,000 youth and their families each year achieve resiliency, dignity and self-sufficiency.

Bellefaire JCB’s Treatment Foster Care Program provides family-based placement for youth up to the age of 21 who have faced challenges so severe that they must be temporarily removed from their home and placed in foster care. These youth are typically experiencing chronic/ongoing trauma, abuse, and mental health issues. To help our foster parents be successful in providing a loving, stable home for the youth in their care, we offer extensive training, ongoing support, and access to an array of wraparound services offered by a variety of programs at Bellefaire JCB.

Requirements to become a foster parent

After deciding to foster, make sure your household members are on board with what will be a life-changing decision to foster. Then, educate yourself about Ohio's requirements for foster parents. Applicants who want to foster or adopt in Ohio must:

  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • Live in a safe and stable home
  • Meet home safety requirements
  • Clear a background check with fingerprinting
  • Provide at least three character references
  • Provide ample space for a foster child in their house or apartment
  • Attend foster parent orientation
  • Take part in required hours of foster parent training
  • Maintain financially stability
  • Prove good health
  • Complete the Home Study process

To apply or ensure you meet the prerequisites, there are two primary Ohio state resources. Contact the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) or a local Public Children's Service Agency (PCSAs).

If you are ready to learn more, contact a local child-placing agency to schedule foster parent information orientation. At orientation, aspiring foster parents learn more about foster parenting responsibilities, navigating the foster system, and the foster application process. If you have questions, orientation is an excellent opportunity to ask questions and meet other potential foster families.

Administrative paperwork can take some time to complete, but having everything prepared will ensure it goes smoothly. It will help the process move along if you gather financial documents ahead of time. These include tax filings and paystubs, which you will need to show as proof of financial stability.

Foster parents in Ohio must also attend 24 hours of pre-service foster parent training. This training teaches foster families about the trauma experienced by all foster children. It also covers how to provide general and specialized care to foster children.

I got out in September. They instigate many things.I would tell staff how I feel about a client and the next thing I know, that client would confront me about what I said. The clients got into fights alot, mostly everyday assistance, would be called.A girl got into a fight and got a concussion and a black eye. They talked about my mental situations to other clients. I was approached about a client about being molested because a staff had told them.I was told by a staff that they do not understand how other staff could have so much hate towards a client.

My child was there from March 2020 - Aug 2020.
To be honest the first 6 weeks were pretty discouraging due to many factors & situations that my child hand a huge part in creating. But staff and myself worked diligently to create a game plan for treatment for my child that worked and from there things went very smoothly! We worked closely on a weekly basis (sometimes on a daily basis) to discuss behaviors, game plans, visits, incident reports, and my favorite was getting the positive reports on growth and change from different staff members working closely with my child.

To any parent considering Residential Treatment, please know it is No cake walk for you or your child and it takes a lot of hard work for everyone involved to be successful!! I was naive about the process and quickly had to learn that my child had to be knocked down (Per Say) in order for them to be built back up into the Best person they can be!! It was hard as a Mother to trust that other people had my child's best interests at heart but I couldn't be more happy with the outcome of letting Bellefaire take the reins.

I have to give credit where credit is due, not that I don't believe that each and every staff member didn't have a hand in helping to guide and counsel my child because I know it was a huge effort on everyone's part but a few that I worked hand & hand with need recognition!

Mr. Kevin was a phenomenal Case Manager & was there every step of the way! He made me feel very informed throughout this process and it was definitely a pleasure working with him.

Miss V is a supervisor on the unit my child stayed in & did a wonderful job holding my child accountable! Miss V was like the "Mom" to my child when I couldn't be & I loved that she seen the potential that my baby had even through all of the mental health diagnoses and behavior issues.

Miss Jen has got to be the best therapist I have ever met in my life!! I have had my child with at least half dozen agencies and more than a dozen different therapist and no one has ever been able to build a relationship or earn trust from my child but Miss Jen!! I wish I were able to clone her, she is quite an amazing therapist!!

I gave 4 ☆ instead of 5 just because of the rough 6 week start, but I Absolutely Recommend Bellefaire JCB to any parent seeking Residential Treatment.
Thank you again Bellefaire Staff for Everything!!
