Requirements to become a foster parent

New Hampshire foster parents are entitled to support payments. These help cover the costs of caring for a foster child. Let's take a look at some of the available benefits:

Support Payments

In New Hampshire, foster parents receive reimbursement for daily costs. This includes board, meals, clothing, and other everyday expenses. The pay rate varies depending on the foster child's age and needs, but base payments begin at $24.48/day, up to $29.49/day.

Children with special needs are also entitled to additional specialized funds, up to $36.86/day. You can learn more about expense payments for New Hampshire foster parents by clicking here.

Medical and Dental Coverage

Children in the New Hamshire foster system are covered for dental and medical care under the Medicare system.

However, it's up to the foster parents to book all necessary medical appointments and make sure the foster child attends them.

Training and Support Groups

Alongside mandatory foster parent training, there are additional courses available. This extra training helps foster parents excel and provide the best possible environment for the children in their care.

Foster parents are also invited to attend local support groups, where they can meet their peers and talk about all aspects of being a New Hampshire foster parent.

My husband David and I found out that I was pregnant and we told our son Connor that at the time was 7yrs old and we were all happy. We found out the sex and was told we are having a girl. We later when I had about 3-4 months left till I gave birth we’re worried on how we would be able to do everything including bills, work and baby sitting. My Husband David and I knew that we couldn’t provide for her and ourselves if we kept her. We have no one to watch her at all and didn’t want her to be put her into daycare because to us that’s a waste of money. David and I decided let’s give her to a loving family that would be able to give her the life she deserves and needs. I reached out to New Hope for Children in an email and then got a phone call from Alisa and I told her I have 5 weeks left till I give birth. Alisa then asked me who we are looking to adopt our baby. I told Alisa it don’t matter to me if she is with any race or sex as long as she is loved and taken care of. Alisa then said you are having a girl? I said yes we found out in an ultrasound and definitely having a girl. Alisa was so excited and told me that her and her husband Tim have been trying to adopt a baby girl for 10 yrs to complete their family. Alisa then asked me how I felt about doing an open adoption instead of going through her adoption angancy New Hope for Children and I said I guess because I wasn’t sure how it all works because I’ve never done any type of adoption. My husband David our son Connor and I are so happy that we did and that I found Alisa and her family because we are all now a bigger family! Because of me having a c-section I could only have one person in the room and my husband has already done so seeing our son was an emergency c-section, I wanted to have Alisa to experience the birth like it was her own, seeing she will never have that chance to. Alisa asked me what I wanted to name her and I said that is up to you because I want this to be like she was having her own baby and she was so filled with joy and started to cry. Everything went so well for all of us and still to this day I have no regrets at all for our decision of giving a wonderful life and family for Mary and we all still get together to visit each other. I love our daughter Mary and I am so happy for her and happy to be part of her even bigger family now! Alisa and Tim you are such great parents and I am so happy to be part of your family! Love Dawn Hoyt
