Every one of us desires a better future for our children. That future can start here at Ruth Harbor and it can start with you. Having a baby is a blessing. Being pregnant can also be a burden. Pregnancy adds another layer of uncertainty and difficulty in an already uncertain and difficult world. The good news is you don’t have to walk this journey alone. Ruth Harbor is a safe place where you will find a home, food, access to medical care, life coaching, a loving team ready to join you in your journey. Most importantly, you will find hope.
While at Ruth Harbor women receive counseling, education support, life-skills training, access to quality health care, spiritual guidance, parenting training and/or adoption assistance at no charge.

Requirements to become a foster parent
Many new parents are worried they'll be on their own if they decide to foster. That's not true; you have tons of support on your side.
You have the Iowa Department of Human Services (DHS). Your local DHS recruits and approves families for fostering and adoption. They also place children with approved parents.
The Iowa Foster & Adoptive Parents Association has handbooks, contact phone numbers, information on training and case plans, useful PDFs for foster parents, and more online.
You also have your local child-placing agency for assistance. They're licensed and approved to train parents and place children in homes. You can find information on how to navigate the legal system or tips for working with birth parents, for example.
Many state non-profits dedicate themselves to assisting foster youth and the families caring for them. They may help with basic care, such as clothing or food, or educate parents on specific topics.

Ruth Harbor is just that--a harbor for women dealing with an unplanned pregnancy. There is no charge for staying. It is funded by private donations. There are two houses and a third is planned. Another house will see a new mom transitioning to motherhood and getting back on her feet. It's a wonderful ministry.
