For more than a century, Lutheran Family Service has been there for people in their time of need providing a variety of services including unplanned pregnancy support, marriage counseling, mental health counseling, adoption services, church worker wellness, and youth and elderly outreach. Lutheran Family Services also offers a number of congregational outreach programs designed to equip people with what they need to successfully manage life challenges before they become a crisis.
Our mission is simple: We walk with people who are experiencing hard times and are there for them just as God has been there for us.
Our values are clear: Grace, Life, Family, Compassion, Accountability and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who came into this world to redeem us. Jesus is the cornerstone of our ministry and the focus of all that we do in serving people.
Lutheran Family Service is a private, not-for-profit organization. We help anyone in need, regardless of their faith. You do not have to be Lutheran or Christian to use or support our services.

Requirements to become a foster parent

Many new parents are worried they'll be on their own if they decide to foster. That's not true; you have tons of support on your side.

You have the Iowa Department of Human Services (DHS). Your local DHS recruits and approves families for fostering and adoption. They also place children with approved parents.

The Iowa Foster & Adoptive Parents Association has handbooks, contact phone numbers, information on training and case plans, useful PDFs for foster parents, and more online.

You also have your local child-placing agency for assistance. They're licensed and approved to train parents and place children in homes. You can find information on how to navigate the legal system or tips for working with birth parents, for example.

Many state non-profits dedicate themselves to assisting foster youth and the families caring for them. They may help with basic care, such as clothing or food, or educate parents on specific topics.

LFS was a great resource for me as a pastor in Iowa. From their congregational services facet to help me understand mental health as it relates to the life of the church, to being an excellent mental health referral for those in my congregation who could benefit from licensed mental health counselling in addition to my pastoral care, and even seeing a counselor using the mental health benefit of my Employee Assistance Program for preventative screening after I had provided pastoral care for a family involved in a highly-publicized murder, I have witnessed excellence at every encounter. Lutheran Family Service provides outstanding care from competent professional, whether for Lutherans, other Christians, or anyone in need of adoption, pregnancy support, and individual or marriage counselling.

The counselors and other staff are extremely helpful. They maintain discretion and are a great resource for any time of your life--birth of a child, death of family member, adoption services, and more. I highly recommend them.

Lutheran family Service has had a profound impact on both my family and my ministry. Through Lutheran Family Service (LFS), we were able to adopt two wonderful daughters who are the joy of our life. I have also benefited from being able to refer members to LFS counselors over the years, who have provided them with professional Christian counsel in time of need, covering a variety of life circumstances. They continue to provide support and educational opportunities for congregations and communities to help address contemporary family concerns. What a blessing LFS is to our families, churches and communities.

Lutheran Family Service embodies the true expression of the gospel of Christ in both Word and Deed. The Christian counseling is Christian. The work that is done with adoption is fulfilling the admonition to "care for the widows and orphans." I have made several referrals to LFS over the years and the services they provided brought healing and comfort to the recipients. Lutheran Family Service staff and their Board seek to meet the current needs of those within and without the church. Thanks be to God for HIs work through LFS!
