Requirements to become a foster parent
Many new parents are worried they'll be on their own if they decide to foster. That's not true; you have tons of support on your side.
You have the Iowa Department of Human Services (DHS). Your local DHS recruits and approves families for fostering and adoption. They also place children with approved parents.
The Iowa Foster & Adoptive Parents Association has handbooks, contact phone numbers, information on training and case plans, useful PDFs for foster parents, and more online.
You also have your local child-placing agency for assistance. They're licensed and approved to train parents and place children in homes. You can find information on how to navigate the legal system or tips for working with birth parents, for example.
Many state non-profits dedicate themselves to assisting foster youth and the families caring for them. They may help with basic care, such as clothing or food, or educate parents on specific topics.

My daughter's review. We are disgusted.
"I just got off the phone with this agency after asking a few questions. One of my questions was what were the policies in regards to how long you must be married until they do a Home Study and start the process of adoption. After telling the woman on the phone we had been recently married, my response was extended laughter and then said that a couple must be married one year before a home study can be conducted, which is understandable but laughing about it is extremely unprofessional. She then asked me if I had any other questions and I said “yes have you ever done Down Syndrome adoption?” The lady on the phone proceeded to laugh again and said “we’ve only done one Downs adoption” (which is extremely disrespectful and not inclusive language) and continued to tell me that “most families coming to this agency are looking for healthy Caucasian babies.” Which is very disturbing. I have my Masters degree in Human Development and I have never experienced such disrespect and lack of empathy towards a person looking into adoption or working with agencies within the area. I am absolutely appalled with what I just experienced over the phone and want others to know to be incredibly cautious over the policies within this agency. Inclusion and diversity must not rank anywhere in their mission or vision within the organization."

Adoption Connection has been great to work with. Sue is kind, caring, and really loves her job. She does a great job of making sure my husband and I understand the adoption process and keeps us informed along the way.
