Greenlight Family Services has been preserving families, providing hope and protecting lives throughout the State of Illinois since 2003. Our mission is to achieve the best outcomes for families, young adults, and children by providing the highest quality services. Each year, Greenlight strategically expanded its legal and social services.
In 2017, Greenlight acquired Porchlight Counseling Services and added specialized sexual assault therapy to our array of crisis counseling services programming.
In 2019, Greenlight expanded its services and moved its main office to the South Side of Chicago to better serve its foster care and post adoption families where they live. Greenlight also opened a Springfield office to better serve the southern region of the state of Illinois.
Today, Greenlight manages the Heart Gallery of Illinois and Adoption Listing Service for the state of Illinois and provides relative, non-relative, second parent, step-parent, adoption services as well as DCFS foster parent adoption and post adoption services. Greenlight provides services for more than 7,000 families and young adults each year.

Requirements to become a foster parent

You must meet minimum requirements to provide foster care for children in Illinois. To become a foster parent, you must:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Attend foster parent orientation
  • Pass a background check
  • Finish 30 hours of foster parent training
  • Complete the Home Study
  • Provide at least three references
  • Clear a physical exam
  • Maintain financial stability

Foster families must be able to provide a safe and comfortable home for a child. You must provide room for the child to have a bed and enough space for personal belongings.

Foster parents do not need to be married or have a partner. However, if married, couples must show a stable marriage of at least one year before they can foster a child in Illinois.

Foster parents need to meet a child's basic care needs, such as providing meals and clothing. Foster families must also support a foster child's education and assist them in developing social skills.

Contact the DCFS or a local licensed child-placing agency to learn more or begin the fostering approval process.

I am so happy to have found this place. From the beginning process of seeking legal advice was easy and made you feel comfortable (No question is a dumb question.) I had the pleasure of working with Susan. She always kept me updated with any changes and followed up in a timely manner. I can not recommend this place enough!

Was referred over to Green light from the Daley Center for adoption assistance. Did everything that was asked of me in a timing fashion with sending over documents up until 11/22 a whole month passed by and still hadn't heard anything. I reached out today and was told by Helen she was glad that I called because she needed me to fill out some more intake forms (yet no one had contacted me). Okay no problem fill them out scan and send them back only to be told they can't help because the child is not in DCFS custody and the parents never terminated their rights. It's been months I was never told this and it's time waste, that I can't get back and it's a hold up in trying to move out of State. I had a job offer that I had been wanting for forever that I couldn't take because of this.

My wife and I used the Center to obtain Guardianship status for our daughter. The process was made very simple and handled extremely professionally by the staff. We both recommend the services of Center For Law & Social Work; our needs and concerns were made priorities.

Sincerely, Gary Hess
