Requirements to become a foster parent
The DHS assists foster families with placement and ensures the child adjusts well to their new environment. Whether you have years of parenting experience or are relatively new to the idea, they have many support options for families. You can find plenty of information on the DHS/DFCS website or call them for more assistance.
Your local licensed child placement agency also places children in the foster system with carefully matched parents. Although foster care is temporary, it's crucial to find the right fit. That's why parents get a say in age range and gender.
There are also many state support groups for foster families that provide educational resources, services, and more. Connecting with these organizations and adding to your personal support network will be invaluable.
One of the best ways to become a better parent, whether you plan on fostering a child short-term or adopting, is to read as much as you can about Georgia's foster system. For instance, recently proposed bills would help to streamline parts of the state's foster care placement system.
You can find plenty of information available online for free as well. Blogs, podcasts, and videos are all incredibly useful ways to obtain new information about fostering.

I am a birth mother. My son was born in 2009 and to be honest, the experience I had during pregnancy and up until his 2nd birthday was nothing short of caring and compassionate. By year 5, Covenant Care seemed far less interested in holding up their role in the agreement, I can only presume because there was no longer any monetary gain in communicating with myself or my sons forever family. There hasn't been a single year in 9 years I haven't had to call and be given the run around trying to recieve my updates. I completely understand that professional roles within the company shift and change, that new employees enter and things can get pushed aside. However, when you are in the business of contracts and agreements, you have an ethical and legal obligation to uphold those agreements. In my experience, the consideration for the well being of their birth mothers ends after your last visit. I have moved with understanding and grace with this company for over 15 years, and have not been given the same respect since 2011. I waited patiently and hopefully as I asked for help in the first 4 years for post partum concerns and issues. To which, at the time, they were only able to offer merely a connection to other birth mothers network. No questions about my mental health or addiontal resources were ever offered. At one point, I was told in year 3 that "this was just a chapter in my life that I would close and move on from" (Jill, who is no longer with the company spoke these words to me before ascending the ranks and running the company for a few years). I am still, to this day overjoyed about the choice I made and the hands on involvement during pregnancy. However, I would be remiss if I didn't finally speak up after all the opportunities I've given Covenant Care in the last decade.

I was in an abusive marriage before and they expect you to be married 5 years before they will consider you? That is ridiculous, that was not my fault. I have been married for 2 years and my husband and I are both Pastors. These children need loving God centered homes.
