Being a foster parent is so much more than loving a child in your home. It’s also showing kindness to a family when they need it most.
It’s giving a child a safe place to land during a hard, scary time when they’re away from home. And it’s showing compassion to a parent who is likely overwhelmed, scared, and without a lot of support.

It’s helping a child stay connected to the only home they’ve ever known, in whatever way it’s safe to do so, and cheering on a family that’s living out a comeback story.

At Bethany, our heart beats for family. We want to see families strong, supported, and together. But we know there are times when families face challenges—and children need care.
That’s why we’re seeking foster parents who believe in families too.

Requirements to become a foster parent

Because there aren't enough foster parents in the District of Columbia, many foster kids end up living in nearby Maryland. However, D.C. has its own minimum requirements for licensing foster parents. Parents for District foster children need must:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Prove financial resources to support a child
  • Rent or own a home
  • Show you are healthy enough to care for a child
  • Provide enough space in the house for each foster child
  • Complete 30 hours of training
  • Pass a Home Study

There is no minimum parenting experience required. Foster parents in the District of Columbia can be single or married, with or without biological children at home. In fact, licensed homes are often a mix of biological and foster or adopted children.

You can work outside the home or be a stay-at-home parent. To help offset the costs of childcare, foster families receive assistance for every foster child in the home.

We are adopting our son who is a perfect match via Bethany. We chose Bethany because there are several Bethany families at my husband's church and having that support network is very helpful for an emotional journey such as this.
I like Bethany because it looks at all the parties involved in the adoption triangle. We get the national Bethany magazine and recently there was a story about a birth mother and her life and struggles after placing her child with an adopting family. The classes we had to take placed a lot of emphasis on empathizing with the birth parents. Later we saw a video about adult transracial adoptees and their experiences.
It is a Christian organization so there is a lot of prayer throughout the process. Lots. Of. Praying. Prayer is woven through and through, as it is needed.
4 stars instead of 5 because the Crofton location is out of the way for us. It requires a car to get there, and getting on highways. I know this is not a big deal to a lot of people but I like trying to be as car free as possible.
