Requirements to become a foster parent

You must meet minimum requirements to provide foster care for children in Colorado. Foster parents for children and families must:

  • Be 21 years of age or older
  • Maintain sufficient income to support a family
  • Have physical and mental capability to care for children and youth
  • Pass a child abuse background and criminal background check
  • Work with a treatment team and undergo future training
  • Complete a Home Study

Prospective foster families can contact a Colorado child placement agency or your local Department of Human Services. Social workers in these child welfare agencies will provide information about Colorado's child welfare system, foster care, and the adoption process.

Social workers recommended that other adults and children in your home agree to provide long-term home care, too. If everyone is ready to welcome a new child, your local agency will help your home become an approved foster home.

Absolutely LOVE these women here. We are so happy we found them and went through our Home Study here. The ladies are all so supportive, and passionate about helping families. We always looked forward to seeing Brenda at our home, as she was very encouraging and insightful. :)

We highly recommend Adoption Choices of Colorado. Previously, we have worked with agencies in other states, as well as separate placement agencies, and had excellent experiences. However, the staff and services with Adoption Choices of Colorado, were by far the best! We felt supported through the entire process. Brenda welcomed us to the agency, giving us an excellent, and well balanced, overview of the process. Stephanie was the caseworker for our homestudy, and is amazing. She guided and supported us through the process, which helped us further build our relationship and learn about becoming parents. Luckily, Stephanie also competed the post placement work, so we worked with her all the way through finalization. Last, but not least, Brittany, the glue that kept us all together and made everything happen. Brittany is amazing, she provided great direction and support during the entire process. She teaches an excellent class on parenting and adoption, that should be required for all new parents! Finally, Brittany coordinated all of the paperwork, attorneys, payments, birth mother support, etc. during the actual placement. Oh, and that doesn’t include the many phone calls along the way.

Overall, Adoption Choices of Colorado is a great choice for adoptive parents and birth parents! They provided us, and the birth mother of our daughter, with amazing support and guidance. We will be working with them again in the future for our next child!

Adoption Choices of COLORADO is an amazing organization!! After several visits across the country to other agencies and lots of research, we chose Adoption Choices for our home study. They were so wonderful- kind, caring, thoughtful and made the experience so personal for us that we changed and went solely through them for our adoption. They were so amazing and supportive during a failed match and they ultimately helped us find our daughter- our missing piece. They have become family and we will always be grateful for everything they’ve done to make our family complete!!!
